Community Spotlight: Mimi

We would like to introduce Mimi!

Mimi was a healthy and active senior who lived a full life. When she contracted pneumonia 6 years ago, things changed. The pneumonia left Mimi with a collapsed lower lung and difficulty breathing. She found it challenging to be active and to continue doing the things she loved.

Mimi: “Prior to my diagnosis of pneumonia, I was a healthy, active senior who participated in many activities. Pneumonia changed all of that for me.”

After many months of ongoing cough and taking antibiotics, Mimi was diagnosed with bronchiectasis. Bronchiectasis is a chronic lung condition that affects the airways by making them wide and floppy and it causes difficulties with clearing mucous. Those with bronchiectasis are at risk of getting lung infections. Living with bronchiectasis means having a daily routine of mucous clearance and taking precautions against infection.

Mimi: “I still cough but not nearly as much.  The rehab exercises brought back a big portion of my active lifestyle. I look forward to the social aspect of the group, but the exercises do work. I still struggle with shortness of breath and congestion, but that is a permanent consequence of lung disease that I have to live with.

I am grateful for the pulmonary rehab program for allowing me to maximize the lung capacity that I have as well as the support I receive. This has allowed me to enjoy activities with my friends and family.”

Mimi has been an active participant in Poplar’s Fitness Club since we started. She sets a great example of how to live a full and active lifestyle, even while managing a chronic lung condition. We asked Mimi what advice she would pass along to those who have been diagnosed with a chronic lung condition. We wanted to know what has helped her the most to get back to doing the things that she loves.

Mimi: “I credit rehab advice and exercise. This has been a benefit. I hope to continue participating in pulmonary rehab and regular exercise. Keeping active helps my quality of life.“
